Asiat ovat kuitenkin vielä tutkimusvaiheessa. Flavonoidit ovat kasveissa yleisesti esiintyviä, fenolirakenteisia yhdisteitä, joista monet ovat voimakkaan värisiä. Osalla flavonoideista on antioksidanttivaikutusta, osa taas vaikuttaa samaan tapaan kuin naissukuhormonit. Flavonoidit jaetaan kemiallisen rakenteen perusteella mm. flavoneihin, flavonoleihin, flavanoneihin ja antosyanidiineihin.
